I took a solo trip down to DC this past week to catch the final two games of the Mets vs. Nationals series. I went by myself but knew that once I arrived there’d be a ton of Mets fans in attendance.
By the second game I lost count of how many shirts I saw. Multiple LOYAL, The Pride of Whitestone, Keep Calm and Cheer On, #IMWITH28, RIP KID, Catcher, Captain, KIRK, 1986 and The Duda-Bides were all spotted.
I brought a backpack filled with free merch to give out and anyone I saw wearing our shirt I’d go up and introduce myself. People love free stuff! I also sent out a tweet with my seat # so people could come by and meet up. It was pretty awesome how many people showed up and I’m still shocked when people ask “can I get a photo with you?”… I just sell t-shirts, not really photo worthy but SURE!
Across from the ballpark is an outdoor place called Fairgrounds which was awesome. It was free to get in and is geared towards the ultimate pre/post game party. They had about 25 sets of cornhole boards, a basketball game, stage with a live band playing, food and most importantly a bar. The bar was built for speed. No shots, no fancy mixed drinks, just a few brands of beer, frozen margaritas or red bull/vodka. That’s it. Since it was a Wed night and the weather was crappy the crowd was pretty dead, but the place has some serious potential. I’d love to see it on a nice summer weekend. It’s also HUGE. If you’ve ever been to the Boardy Barn out on Long Island, it’s about 4 times the size. Instead of building walls the space was made with stacked up shipping containers. Great idea and gives a cool look.
I wasn’t wowed from the ballpark itself but I had a good time. From the outside it wasn’t really that breathtaking and nothing particualry caught my eye except the bicycle valet. That’s a really great idea. You can ride your bike to the game and lock it up inside a fenced in area. They even had someone watching over them. Not sure if there was a cost but it would be worth it to beat waiting for a packed train after the game. There were also a plethora of bike racks next to every gate. Citi Field should look in to that.
Mets lost the series against our division rival. With a shorthanded pen, an ice cold Ike Davis and a huge question mark at SS I’m just happy they didn’t get swept. Fun trip and awesome time meeting so many fans.
Thanks for all the support guys. The 7 Line Army is strong in DC!
